AOHP is pleased to announce that Daniels Health is now the exclusive sponsor of AOHP’s highly-successful EXPO-S.T.O.P. (EXPOsure Survey of Trends in Occupational Practice). EXPO-S.T.O.P. is an electronic survey designed to ascertain the incidence of sharps injuries and mucocutaneous blood exposures among healthcare workers in U.S. healthcare facilities.

AOHP has published the expanded 16th edition of its flagship publication, Getting Started: Occupational Health in the Healthcare Setting. This comprehensive resource manual has proven its value to occupational health professionals (OHPs) for nearly two decades as the specialty practice of occupational health in healthcare has evolved in scope and complexity.
Getting Started provides an overview of essential information the novice OHP needs to promote the health, safety, and well-being of healthcare personnel. Crutchfield, MA, BSN, RN, was elected Executive President, and Audrey Sadler, MSN, CEAS, FNP-BC, COHN-S, was elected Executive Secretary. Other officers re-elected to two-year terms include Region 2 Director Cory Worden, PhD ABD, MS, CSHM, CSP, CHSP, ARM, REM, CESCO, and Region 4 Director Alfred J. Carbuto, MS, RN-BC, FNP, COHN-S. All terms run two years and will end in early September 2021.
Executive President Lydia Crutchfield has been actively involved with AOHP for 18 years on both the chapter and national levels. In addition to holding the position of Executive Vice President for the past four years, she has also served as Chair of the AOHP National Conference and Lead Editor of both the 2010 and 2012 editions of AOHP's renowned manual Getting Started: Occupational Health in the Healthcare Setting. AOHP Releases 2016 and 2017 Report of Its National Survey on Blood Exposures Among U.S. Healthcare Workers
AOHP recently released report of the EXPO-S.T.O.P. (EXPOsure Survey of Trends in Occupational Practice) 2016 and 2017 surveys in the AOHP Journal (Vol. 39, No. 1). AOHP's EXPO-S.T.O.P. is an electronic survey designed to ascertain the incidence of sharps injuries and mucocutaneous blood exposures among healthcare workers (HCW) in U.S. healthcare facilities.
EXPO-S.T.O.P., the largest annual survey of its kind conducted in the United States, was initiated in 2011 to establish a nationally representative overview of blood and body fluid exposure. The 2016 survey, with facilities from 37 different states participating, is geographically the most extensive to date, and with 224 hospitals participating, EXPO-S.T.O.P. 2017 is the largest survey to date. AOHP publishes the survey results to provide healthcare facilities with up-to-date data on national exposure rates and trends to enable benchmarking and evidence-based decisions for their exposure-reduction strategies. In addition, the survey identifies the top 10 participating facilities with the lowest rates and, via these, has enabled other research to be published on successful exposure-reduction strategies. The Critical Role of Occupational Health in Healthcare
AOHP has released a Position Statement on The Critical Role of Occupational Health in Healthcare. AOHP advises that healthcare employers recognize the value of Occupational Health staff, who are responsible for the health and safety all healthcare workers.
AOHP's Position Statement defines the requirements of the Occupational Health Professional, who must continually learn new skills, adapt current practices to meet changing needs, and develop innovative approaches to solving problems. It also highlights key areas of responsibility for these professionals within the healthcare organization, including:
• Evaluating individuals prior to and throughout employment.
• Providing vaccinations, fitness for duty evaluations, and injury management and reporting.
• Understanding evolving national and state regulatory standards and guidelines.
• Overseeing respirator fit testing, and safe patient handling and workplace violence prevention programs.
• Management of bloodborne pathogen and ergonomics practices.

AOHP Signs Three-Year Extension with NIOSH Total Worker Health® Affiliate ProgramThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) signed a three-year Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), effective July 12, 2018, that extends AOHP's collaborative relationship with NIOSH as a Total Worker Health® Affiliate.
This new MOA encourages further development of and participation in mutually beneficial activities between NIOSH and AOHP to advance the Total Worker Health initiative, including joint research, program development, educational collaborations, publication development and dissemination, and the cross-promotion of related activities. As an affiliate, AOHP:
· Disseminates fundamental information and updates about Total Worker Health through the association's monthly and quarterly print and online publications.
· Supports members in including Total Worker Health information during chapter meetings.
· Encourages individual members to utilize Total Worker Health information and resources to improve health, safety, and wellness efforts at an organizational level.
· Collaborates with NIOSH to provide Total Worker Health topics at AOHP's Annual National Conference.
· Shares best practices from AOHP's EXPO-S.T.O.P. survey to reduce sharps injuries/blood exposures.
· Collaborates on areas of concern in healthcare safety and health, such as safety culture, shift work/long work hours, leave management, and workplace violence.

AOHP Designated a NIOSH Total Worker Health® Affiliate
NIOSH and AOHP signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in July 2017 that designates AOHP a NIOSH Total Worker Health® Affiliate.
NIOSH launched the Total Worker Health program in June 2011 to advance the overall safety, health and well-being of workers. Total Worker Health is defined as policies, programs and practices that integrate protection from work-related safety and health hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to advance worker well-being. AOHP grants free access to “Proven Strategies to Reduce Blood Exposures Among U.S. HCW"
Following recent publication of the paper entitled “Proven Strategies to Reduce Blood Exposures among U.S. Healthcare Workers,” the Journal of the Association of Occupational Health Professionals is, for the first time, offering free access to the paper.
“There has been much interest in the paper which outlines the strategies that enabled the top ten hospitals to reduce sharps injuries to a level 70% below the national average,” says AOHP Journal Editor Kim Stanchfield, “and we need to make such an important paper freely available to all.”

AOHP Publishes “Proven Strategies to Prevent Bloodborne Pathogen Exposures in EXPO-S.T.O.P. Hospitals”
The Journal of the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) recently published in their Winter 2017 edition (March 2017). the results of its member-survey which ascertained their most effective strategies to reduce sharps injuries and mucocutaneous blood exposures (BE) among their hospital staff.

AOHP's EXPO-S.T.O.P. (EXPOsure Survey of Trends in Occupational Practice) was established as a nationally representative blood exposure database and benchmark resource and has completed its fifth consecutive annual survey. A 22-item electronic survey for 2015 calendar year data was developed and distributed to AOHP members nationally and 181 hospitals responded with data suitable for inclusion.
In addition to surveying AOHP members for their BE incidence rates, the authors, Dr Linda Good and Terry Grimmond, determined the “Top 5” facilities with the lowest BE incidence rates, and interviewed them to ascertain what were their strategies that brought about such marked reductions. AOHP Releases 2016 Staffing Survey Results
AOHP has released the results of its 2016 Staffing Survey, which provides a detailed overview of characteristics, workload and staffing patterns for occupational health departments in healthcare.
AOHP developed the Staffing Survey to address the lack of information that exists about current staffing needs for occupational health departments in U.S. healthcare settings. This most recent Staffing Survey builds on information that AOHP previously collected and analyzed in 2011 and 2014. The 2011 survey provided descriptive information about the relationship between full-time equivalent staffing levels and the number of healthcare workers served. In 2014, the survey was expanded to examine the relationship between staffing levels and reports of job stressors, well-being and job satisfaction.

AOHP and NIOSH Continue Collaborative Partnership With Five-Year Extension of Memorandum of Understanding
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) have committed to continuing their collaborative partnership to improve workplace safety and health in the healthcare setting with the renewal of their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). AOHP Executive Board Member MaryAnn Gruden Appointed to NIOSH Board of Scientific Counselors
AOHP is pleased to announce the appointment of Executive Board Member MaryAnn Gruden to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Board of Scientific Counselors. Her two-year term begins January 1, 2016.
The NIOSH Board of Scientific Counselors includes 15 experts in fields related to occupational safety and health. These members, selected by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, advise the NIOSH Director on occupational safety and health research and prevention programs. The Board also provides advice on standards of scientific excellence, current needs in the field of occupational safety and health, and the applicability and dissemination of research findings. AOHP Seeks EXPO-S.T.O.P. Survey Participants to Analyze Blood Exposures Among Healthcare Workers
March 3, 2015 – The Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) is requesting information from occupational health professionals nationwide through its EXPO-S.T.O.P. (EXPOsure Survey of Trends in Occupational Practice) survey to continue to expand knowledge on sharps injuries and mucocutaneous blood and body fluid exposure rates in the United States and across the globe.
Blood exposure among healthcare workers is a serious occupational risk that healthcare facilities strive to reduce, yet the United States had no nationwide database for citing or benchmarking sharps injuries and mucocutaneous exposures prior to AOHP's commissioning of EXPO-S.T.O.P. The organization, which is dedicated to conducting practice-driven research, called on its diverse membership of occupational health professionals who work in healthcare to submit a wide range of data. Japan Infection Control Support Association (JICSA) Receives AOHP’s 2014 Business Award
AOHP is pleased to announce the Japan Infection Control Support Association (JICSA) as the recipient of the 2014 AOHP Business Recognition Award. The award was accepted by Eiji Doi-San and his interpreter Emiko Griffith on September 12, 2014 at the AOHP Annual National Conference in New Orleans, LA.
JICSA, which entered a formal partnership with AOHP in 2010, was granted the award for its visionary collaboration to translate AOHP's renowned resource manual Getting Started: Occupational Health in the Healthcare Setting into Japanese to support the work of occupational health professionals internationally. The translated manual, which serves as a valuable resource for training and education, was released in Osaka, Japan on July 19, 2014 at a meeting of more than 500 of the country's nurses and other health professionals who work in occupational health, infection control, sterile processing and central distribution. AOHP recently published the third edition of Beyond Getting Started: A Resource Guide for Implementing a Safe Patient Handling Program in the Acute Care Setting to promote the health and safety of healthcare personnel and patients across the nation. AOHP Members Release Study Results on the Impact of Age-Related Occupational Injuries
Two members of the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) are the first to present research findings that directly examine how patterns of aging and occupational injury risk for the national healthcare workforce compare with trends across all industries. Ken Scott, MPH and Lee Newman, MD, MA, FCCP, FACOEM first published the report of their findings - The Aging Healthcare Workforce: Employment and Occupational Injuries Among Workers in US Private Hospitals During 2010 - in the Fall 2013 AOHP Journal. “The healthcare workforce is aging, but occupational health professionals who work in healthcare are ill-prepared to protect this aging workforce,” Newman explains. “There haven’t been many studies that have examined the relationships between age and occupational injury risks among healthcare workers.” For more information…

The Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) endorses the recently published American Nurses Association (ANA) Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) Standards. On behalf of healthcare professionals nationwide, the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) has released its 2013-2015 Public Policy Statement, which specifically targets health and safety concerns in healthcare. Three key areas of focus and five targeted health and safety initiatives for AOHP to address during the next two years were identified by the 2010 AOHP membership survey and needs assessment, and through the partnerships that AOHP has developed with other stakeholders.
