Overview: Natural hazards such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and landslides pose significant risks to communities, including healthcare facilities. Understanding and predicting these events is crucial for preparedness and safety. This presentation will explore how earth scientists evaluate and predict natural disasters, emphasizing the methodologies and technologies used in evaluating risk associated with hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, landslides, and climate change.
Additionally, we will address human cultural perceptions of risk for these hazards. Healthcare safety professionals will gain insights into how their institution and community’s risk can be calculated and the importance of integrating scientific data into emergency response planning. This knowledge is vital for enhancing the resilience of healthcare systems and ensuring the safety of both patients and staff in the face of natural hazards.
Objectives:
1. Understanding Origins of Hazards (natural disasters)
2. Evaluating Probability and Risk (natural disasters)
3. Why do people respond to Hazards differently?
