Topic Overview: Chronic diseases are increasing at an alarming rate. Poor diet is a major cause of death and disability in the United States resulting in a rising burden of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. This presentation will introduce participants to lifestyle medicine and its core tenants, specifically focusing on optimal nutrition utilizing a whole food plant-based diet and its power to prevent and reverse many of the foodborne diseases that plague our nation.
Objectives:
1. Review the state of health in America and the epidemic of chronic diseases
2. Review the state of healthcare
3. Summarize and discuss the field of lifestyle medicine and its core tenants
4. Focus on and discuss nutrition and the power of a whole food plant-based diet to prevent and reverse chronic disease 5. Explore how occupational health professionals can help workers attain their best health
Speaker Bio:
Leticia has been practicing in occupational health both as a registered nurse and a nurse practitioner for over 35 years, 25 of those years in healthcare doing hospital-based employee health. She is an ABOHN certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist and certified by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching. In more recent years, after some emerging health issues, Leticia began to make Lifestyle Medicine a major focus of her study and clinical practice, recognizing the role lifestyle behaviors contribute to illness or wellness. Her desire is to help individuals work towards and sustain their best health in order to add years to life and life to years.
