Joyce Safian Scholarship Award

Introduction:

Joyce Safian was the originator of the Association, formerly known as the Association of Hospital Employee Health Professionals (AHEHP); renamed in 1994 to the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP). When Joyce began working as a hospital employee health nurse, she recognized this as a specialty area which lacked a “go-to place”. She developed policies, made presentations, and significantly reduced workers’ compensation costs for her hospital. When she began receiving calls related to her expertise, she organized a local networking group. She served as the first Chapter President. She has an entrepreneurial spirit and describes herself as pioneering inroads in the Northern California occupational health sites. Her mission was to make evidenced-based protocols available for all hospital employee health programs. Her experience in employee health gave her a start to develop her own consulting business.
