Getting Started on the Road Workshop

AOHP's traveling education program, Getting Started on the Road, is a comprehensive, informative course designed for occupational health professionals new to the field. Course content is practical and up-to-date, presented by a team of experienced occupational health nurses. All participants will also receive the latest edition of “Getting Started” resource manual in CD format.

Workshop Objectives Include

  • Describe how the occupational health professional interacts in the health care facility’s organizational structure.
  • Discuss areas of medical-legal confidentiality in occupational health.
  • Identify the federal, state, and local regulatory requirements as related to job placement, physical hazards, and biological and chemical exposures.
  • State current infection control practices related to infectious disease.
  • Identify strategies to utilize health teaching in infection control and safety.
  • Describe the effectiveness of case management in loss control.
  • Explain how to communicate the value of an occupational health professional service and continuous quality improvement.

Getting Started on the Road, AOHP’s flagship educational program for occupational health nurses new to the field, is coming to a location near you! This comprehensive, informative course is presented through workshop, audio and video conference sites across the nation by teams of knowledgeable, experienced occupational health nurses. In just one day, participants gain valuable resources and helpful tools – including the latest edition of the Getting Started resource manual in CD format – to start on the path to a longstanding career in occupational health.

Continuing Nursing Education: This workshop offers 8.0 contact hours (9.6 for Iowa nurses).

Inquisit is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Inquisit is approved by the Florida Department of Health Board of Nursing as a provider of continuing education credits. Provider number 50-6692.
Inquisit is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing as a provider of continuing education credits. Provider number CEP 13129.
Inquisit is Iowa Board of Nursing provider 333.

You must attend the full 8-hour course for CNE credit. An evaluation form must be completed to receive the certificate.

SPEAKER BIOS

Mary Bliss, RN COHN
Mary Bliss, a Certified Occupational Health Nurse, has been employed at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, IL since October 1987. Methodist is a central Illinois hospital with approximately 3,000 employees, including staff at 52 off-site facilities throughout the state. She oversees the operations of Employee Health Services at Methodist, ensuring that all new hires meet the requirements of local, state and federal governing agencies. She also manages the Workers’ Compensation program for the hospital and off-site locations. Bliss has been a member of AOHP for approximately 15 years and has held the offices of Vice President and President for the Illinois Chapter. She currently serves on the AOHP Board of Directors as Region 3 Director. Her leadership experience with AOHP, and her knowledge gained by attending several AOHP National Conferences, has enabled her to initiate and sustain a successful Safe Patient Handling program at her facility. Due to the success of this program, Bliss has presented at several conferences, including two Safe Patient Handling conferences in Illinois, AOHP chapter meetings in Illinois and Indiana, the Magnet Consortium, a Safe Patient/Resident/Client Handling conference at Northern Illinois University in Naperville, IL, and the 2011 AOHP Annual National Conference.

Anna M Hook, BS RN
Anna Hook, Occupational Health Coordinator for Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL, has more than 40 years of nursing experience in critical care, recovery, med/surg, and occupational and employee health, including eight years in her current position. She is responsible for maintaining employee health records, and for ensuring compliance requirements for public health, OSHA, CDC and The Joint Commission related to immunizations, BBP Exposure, TB compliance/exposures, and the respiratory protection and influenza compliance programs. She works closely with infection control and oversees compliance requirements for ancillary staff including providers, volunteers and students, and serves on a number of the health center’s healthcare committees. Hook has been an active member of the AOHP Illinois Chapter for 12 years, holding a number of leadership positions in the organization since 2005, and currently serves as Executive Treasurer of the AOHP Board of Directors. Hook earned her RN from the Marion County General Hospital School of Nursing in 1972 and Bachelor of Science in Health Arts from the University of St. Francis in 1999.

Denise Knoblauch, BSN RN COHN-S/CM
Denise Knoblauch has more than 20 years of experience as an occupational health professional in healthcare. She began her career as the lone Employee Health Nurse in a small hospital setting and then transitioned to an urban medical center that provides occupational health services to employees and 500 companies. She has experience as a staff nurse, infection control practitioner, clinic coordinator and case manager, and developed the case manager role in her current department. Today, Knoblauch functions as a case manager for medical center employees, as well as for outside employers, facilitating communication and return to work issues. She is an active member in AOHP, having held both local and national positions on the AOHP Board of Directors. She is currently co-chair of the Continuing Education Committee and co-instructor for Getting Started on the Road. Knoblauch has presented nationally, regionally and locally on a variety of occupational health topics. She is currently completing an original nursing research project working with the housekeeping department to reduce injuries. She is a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist and Case Manager for ABOHN.
