Getting Started on the Road, AOHP’s flagship educational program for occupational health nurses new to the field, is coming to a location near you! This comprehensive, informative course is presented through workshop, across the nation by teams of knowledgeable, experienced occupational health nurses. In just one day, participants gain valuable resources and helpful tools – including the latest edition of the Getting Started resource manual in CD format – to start on the path to a longstanding career in occupational health. COURSE OBJECTIVES
Describe how the occupational health professional interacts in the healthcare facility’s organizational structure.
Discuss areas of medical-legal confidentiality in occupational health.
Identify the federal, state and local regulatory requirements as related to job placement, physical hazards, and biological and chemical exposures.
State current infection control practices related to infectious disease.
Identify strategies to utilize health teaching in infection control and safety.
Describe the effectiveness of case management in loss control.
Explain how to communicate the value of an occupational health professional service and continuous quality improvement.
SPEAKER BIOS Carolyn Amrich, RN COHN – Carolyn Amrich began her career as a pediatric nurse at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and has been in Occupational Health at Children’s since 1991. Carolyn took the exam for certification (COHN) in May 2000. The department has expanded from Employee Health Services to Occupational Health and Wellness over the past 15 years. Carolyn began as the sole employee and now manages four nurses, one medical assistant and one administrative assistant. The wellness program is expanding and includes Weight Watchers at Work, a walking program called Step Now and a tobacco free program. Carolyn consults regularly with internal and external resources from a variety of fields to help create peer and patient safe practice solutions to hospital wide problems. She has been the lead nurse planner/presenter for AOHP’s Getting Started Workshop for the past several years.
Carol Cohan RN BSN MHA, COHN-S/CM – Carol Cohan is an experienced Registered Nurse with expertise in the field of Occupational Health and Occupational Health Case Management. Carol has worked at a large university-affiliated medical center for 36 years and currently serves as Director of Employee Health responsible for 6700 employees. She has a successful record of developing and managing a Workers Compensation Case Management program and Transitional Duty program identifying and resolving complex issues resulting in reducing employee lost work days and increasing early return to work and productivity while reducing costs. She has proven success in assuring compliance with regulatory agencies at all levels. A skilled facilitator with experience to train both specialized and non-technical adult learners, Carol uses her years of experience to educate workshop participants. Carol has been an active member of AOHP since 1997 and has held the office of AOHP New York chapter president and Region 4 Director.
Denise Knoblauch, BSN RN COHN-S/CM – Denise Knoblauch has more than 20 years of experience as an occupational health professional in healthcare. She began her career as the lone Employee Health Nurse in a small hospital setting and then transitioned to an urban medical center that provides occupational health services to employees and 500 companies. She has experience as a staff nurse, infection control practitioner, clinic coordinator and case manager, and developed the case manager role in her current department. Today, Denise functions as a case manager for medical center employees, as well as for outside employers, facilitating communication and return to work issues. She is an active member in AOHP, having held both local and national positions on the AOHP Board of Directors. She is currently co-chair of the Continuing Education Committee and co-instructor for Getting Started on the Road. Denise has presented nationally, regionally and locally on a variety of occupational health topics. She is currently completing an original nursing research project working with the housekeeping department to reduce injuries. She is a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist and Case Manager for ABOHN.
